Every December, there’s a special kind of energy that fills the air. And no, I’m not just talking about the holiday lights or peppermint everything – I mean the kind of joy that comes from watching a four-legged friend take center stage in their best winter outfit, ears perked, tail wagging, and completely locked in on a pine-scented adventure.
For the past two years, I’ve photographed Ruby and Layla at the Rogish Christmas Tree Farm. These miniature dachshunds come dressed to impress, thanks to their mom who has perfected the art of canine holiday fashion. For one photo they’re posing regally on the back of an old pickup truckd and the next they’re zipping through a maze of Christmas trees like a scene from a holiday film. They weren’t “perfect” models – they were completely themselves, and that’s what made those images unforgettable.

So to help you capture that same magic this season (and maybe give your dog the holiday they truly deserve), I’ve put together this gift guide filled with meaningful, local, and joy-sparking ideas.
Let’s be honest – most dogs don’t need another squeaky reindeer that’ll lose a limb by New Year’s. But what they do need is our attention, our shared moments, and maybe a few homemade treats.
When I talk to clients or fellow dog lovers around the holidays, they often ask what to gift their pets or the animal lovers in their lives. Here’s the thing: the best gifts usually don’t come from big box stores. They come from thoughtful choices – often right here in – that honor the love we share with our dogs.
Below are some of my favorite ways to spoil your pup (or a fellow pet parent) without just adding more stuff to the pile. Trust me, these ideas are rooted in real meaning – not gimmicks.
Shopping local means you’re gifting something unique and helping your community thrive. Every dollar goes further when it stays in the city we all call home.
Some of my go-to local spots:

Some of the best memories don’t fit in a stocking. They live in photographs, in shared laughs, and sometimes in a blanket of wet pawprints on your car seat.
Here are experience-based gifts I absolutely love:
If there’s one piece of behind-the-scenes advice I give every year, it’s this: don’t force your pet into a situation they don’t enjoy just for the sake of holiday tradition. Not every dog loves a big family party, a reindeer headband, or posing in the cold.
What I recommend instead:

Whether you’re shopping for your best friend’s dog or thinking about giving yourself (and your pup) a holiday gift that actually means something, this season is a chance to reflect on the joy our animals bring us.
When you gift locally, support experience-based adventures, or just carve out time to be present with your pet, you’re honoring that bond in a big way. It might not come in fancy wrapping, but it’ll leave a bigger impact than any toy off a shelf.
A professional photo session is one of my favorite ways to help pet parents fall in love with their dogs all over again. Whether you’re thinking of gifting a session or booking something special for yourself, I’d love to help create those memories.

And if nothing else – give your dog a belly rub from me. They earned it.
