For those who are new(er) here, I thought now might be a good time to introduce myself and why you might want to choose me as your Cleveland pet photographer.
I’ve been a Cleveland pet photographer for about 6 years now. Unlike a lot of photographers, I actually got into photography later in life. I took a photography class when I was working on a PhD in Sociology. At the time, I wanted to incorporate photography into my dissertation, which was about clowns. I tried looking for some images from that project, but couldn’t find any. Likely a good thing for those of you with coulrophobia!
Let’s just say that I never finished the dissertation, but my love of photography remained.
I ended up taking more classes and eventually opened my business in 2016. Originally I wanted to take senior photos (and still do on occasion), but once I started volunteering at City Dogs my love of photographing pets really came into focus (pun intended).
Today I still routinely photograph adoptable dogs for City Dogs. Within the last few years I’ve included the Cleveland Animal Protective League, Euclid Animal Shelter, Mutts in a Rutt Rescue, Sanctuary for Senior Dogs, Second Chance Animal Rescue, and Mercy’s Door Pet Rescue to my roster as well. Three years ago I secured my very own studio in Cleveland, primarily so I could photograph adoptable animals. And given the unpredictability of Cleveland weather, being able to photograph indoors has been invaluable.
In addition to volunteering with shelter dogs, I’ve also been working at the Cleveland APL for the last 3 years. My primary job there is as an adoptions associate (i.e., finding perfect homes for the pets in our care). Through my role there, I also went through Fear Free certification training, which means I have the training to try and make any animal feel comfortable in my space. I’m also able to read their body language and determine when they are done. As I always say in my session, as soon as anyone is no longer having fun, the session is over. This is especially true for animals who have trouble advocating for themselves.
So if you’re looking to get images of your pet from someone who is knowledgeable but doesn’t take herself too seriously, I might just be the right match for you! And be forewarned: I’m likely going to want to dress up your pet and will always ask if you want to be in the photo. Ready to get your own images? Head to my main page and set up a call!
I loved reading your story! I adore that you support Fear Free handling and methods, it’s so important!!
I so agree! I would love it if they did a training session for those of us in this type of industry. I’m glad I got to go through the training through my other job, though.
So nice to get to know you a bit better. Cleveland is lucky to have such a caring devoted pet photographer as you. I love the photo in the matching sweatshirts, too cute!
Thanks so much, Donna. We’re not going to talk about how many matching outfits my dog Blanche and I have!
Ah, Cleveland! I’m not far from you in Pittsburgh and head to the Lyndhurst area here and there to get my skates sharpened. I can see a Cleveland pet photographer/Pittsburgh pet photographer meet-up sometime!
That would be amazing, Jessica!
Robyn I love these photos of you! They really show how comfortable dogs are with you and how much you love being with them too. What more could you ask for when searching for a Cleveland pet photographer? The photo of you and the dog in matching hoodies is so cute!
Thank you so much, Amanda. Two of them were pups of mine who are now gone. I’m so thankful I have these images with them, which is why I always encourage clients to jump into a few photos.
I love this Robyn, thank you for sharing more about you! What wonderful work you do for the Cleveland rescue community!
Thans, Michelle. It’s definitely a passion and I can barely remember the time before I was involved in rescue.
This was great to learn more about you, Robyn! It was nice also being educated about Fear Free since I didn’t know about that. I can’t wait to hear more about your clown studies 🤣 We are excited for our Vday session and all the ones to come this year!
I’m amazed there were things you still don’t know about me! And I’m happy to talk clowns, though don’t know that we’ll have enough time to do so this weekend.
A dissertation about clowns! I need to know more.
But wow to switch from a Phd in sociology to pet photography what a change!
Sadly, it never made it out of the preliminary stages. And I still use my sociology degree — I teach it at a local community college. The pet photography arose as a means to explore my creative side.
Robyn is a fantastic photographer and person. She’s taken pictures of my dog and I’ve taken a bunch of shelter dogs to the studio for their photos and it’s always a great experience.
Thanks, Val. I always love it when you bring an adoptable dog to the studio!
